Airlines Go for Banding
Looks nice, easy to open too. Airline food trays are now being banded, an idea which British Airways pioneered.
More and more airlines in Europe are using bands on their food trays as a way of simplifying the packaging and improving the look of their food presentation.
The bands shown here are typical examples of a simple lid and tray held together by the band, which has replaced shrink wrap. The bands are inexpensive, effective, great for promotional messages, easy to open and help to minimise waste – and create less weight for planes to carry.

Buitoni Uses Bands to Hold Two-For-The-Price-Of-One Offers
Buitoni has long been in the forefront of packaging innovation. It recently simplified production on a line packaging fresh pasta on a tray with a printed lid to filling a standard plastic bag and wrapping it with a 60 mm wide band, pre-printed on both sides in full colour. After printing, the band is laminated with a thin plastic film to protect it, prevent it from tearing and further improve its appearance. The result is a remarkably elegant, but highly cost effective, pack. Buitoni also use banding machines to hold multiple packs – in this case to promote a two-for-one offer.

Fresh salads
Branding with Banding - Convenient Fresh Salads are Marked Ready for Sale in One Step
On the left, a special salad tray wrapped in clear film and banded with an attractive 50 mm wide band, which was pre-printed with sales and regulatory information. Almost all of the pack’s contents are revealed – a sleeve would have hid them. Pricing and use by date are over printed in line. The logo is a separate label placed by the banding machine.

Marks & Spencer’s Twin Pack
On the left, an example of a recent project with suppliers to Marks & Spencer’s. The illustration shows a salad tray banded together to form a twin pack.
This pack was collated at the end of the production line and manually banded on an ATS US2000 banding machine. The banding tape, made of coated paper, was pre -printed with the message “2 for £3”. The design of the trays enabled the twin packs to be displayed on edge in the chill cabinet, presenting a very clear message to the customer.
Print mark registration is also possible enabling promotional information to be positioned on the top of the pack and the bar code on the bottom. Additional information such as sell by dates and price data can be printed in line onto the pre-printed tape using a thermal transfer printer attached to the banding machines.
Bags of Marks & Spencer 1kg new potatoes and punnets of potatoes have also been banded together to create special offer packs using clear polypropylene tape 50mm wide.

Banding Enables Switch From Cartons
Thompson & Morgan (Young Plants) Ltd have introduced new packaging for their live plant mailing operation using an ultrasonically sealed clear tape band along their mailing package. Three ATS banding machines from Jenton have been added to the Thompson & Morgan mailing line and as a result, the company is able to use a sleeve in place of a glued folded carton.
The 30mm wide clear PP tape is applied by the banding machine, with production speeds of up to 25 bands per minute being achieved.
Banding offers an opportunity for companies to take full advantage of the economy of a cardboard sleeve without complicated notching systems. Fully automated equipment for in-line operation can be supplied.
